چکیده

The aim of the present study is to seek association, if any, between preobesity (overweight) and obesity with ABO and RH(D) blood groups. For this, blood samples were collected from a total of 425 unrelated subjects belonging to two main endogamous caste populations viz., the Jat Sikh and Bania inhabiting the north-west border Indian state of Punjab. BMI was used as a proxy indicator for screening the subjects into pre-obese and obese categories. Blood groupings were done using standard serological techniques. Results show that RH(D) blood group is associated with pre-obesity in the Bania population, suggesting its possible role as a pre-clinical marker. This is the first report from north-west India showing an association between Rhesus negativity and pre-obesity.
